The student with the winning essay, as selected by the guest judge will receive an award of $500.
Craig McNamara, son of the Vietnam War era Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara and author of the book Because our Fathers Lied, will serve as the Guest Judge.

Pop Up in Oakland, NJ Public Library- December, 2019
The book launch and pop-up exhibit at the Oakland Public Library included presentations by New Jersey residents Paula Rogovin, peace activist; Jan Barry, Vietnam veteran, poet, author, journalist and professor; and JJ Johnson, a journalist and one of the Fort Hood Three, who, as one of the first soldiers to publicly refuse to deploy to Vietnam, served time in federal prison.

Coordinated by Professor Linda Yarr, the exhibit and symposia had eight university co-sponsors and nine outside organization sponsors. The exhibit opened at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, co-sponsored by the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, the Oral History Master of Arts, Mott-Haven Oral History Project and Associate Professor Lien-Hang T. Nguyen. The program featured poet Jan Barry, and veteran activists Howard Levy and JJ Johnson, both of whom spent years in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, and Susan Schnall.

In early 2019, to gain more attention at schools and colleges, Ron Carver, David Cortright and Barbara Doherty edited a companion book, Waging Peace in Vietnam: US Soldiers and Veterans Who Opposed the War. Carver chose Cortright as a co-editor since he wrote the definitive book on the GI Movement Soldiers In Revolt. Barbara Doherty is a professional journalist and editor. American Historical Association Annual Conference in New York City- January, 2019
The American Historical Association is the largest professional organization serving historians in all fields and all professions. The AHA is a trusted voice advocating for history education, the professional work of historians, and the critical role of historical thinking in public life. This year, we had a booth at their annual conference in New York City.  Two of the contributing authors to the Waging Peace in Vietnam companion book made presentations at the conference.

Exhibit Comes Stateside and Shows at University of Notre Dame - May, 2018
The exhibit opened at the University of Notre Dame in May 2018 a month after its premiere in Saigon. Ron Carver came back from Vietnam to the United States and with help from Barbara Doherty, David Cortright and photographers Bill Short and Les Bartlett, created a duplicate of the Waging Peace in Vietnam exhibit. Much of the material in the exhibit comes from the recently opened GI Press Collection of the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Exhibit Debuts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - March, 2018
In October 2016, Ms. Huynh Ngoc Van, Director of Vietnam’s War Remnants Museum, asked Ron Carver to create an exhibit telling the story of the GI Movement. It premiered at the museum on March 19, 2018. The opening was attended by many notable Vietnamese guests along with thirty American veterans of the Vietnam War.
